Wānaka in winter: skiing, snow and slow days by the fire
Cardrona, Treble Cone, Snow Farm and what to do on a rest day. How to plan a winter break in Wānaka.
Two ski fields close by
Cardrona and Treble Cone are both within about 40 minutes' drive of town. Cardrona has wide groomed runs and good beginner areas, so it suits families and mixed groups. Treble Cone is steeper, with long runs and some of the best lake views from any ski field in the country.
The season usually runs from mid-June into early October, depending on snow. Shuttles run from town to both fields if you'd rather not drive the access roads.
Driving in snow
The ski field roads are steep and partly unsealed, and chains can be compulsory after fresh snow. Carry chains (you can hire them in town), check the road report each morning and allow extra time. If you're not used to winter driving, the shuttle is the easy option.
Cross-country and snow play
Snow Farm, up the Cardrona Valley, has groomed cross-country trails and snowshoeing, and is a good choice for anyone who wants to be out in the snow without riding a chairlift. Many visitors also stop at the historic Cardrona Hotel on the way back for a drink by the fire.
Rest days
Clear, frosty mornings are perfect for a lakefront walk or a coffee in the sun. Lake Hāwea is a 15-minute drive away and very quiet in winter. Long lunches, an afternoon film and an early night are all part of the plan.
Book early
The July school holidays and weekends through the season fill quickly, so book your stay, ski hire and lessons early. Wānaka Retreat sleeps six, with plenty of room to dry gear and warm up at the end of the day.
