How to get to Waiheke Island from Auckland: ferry guide
Passenger ferries, the car ferry, travel times and tips for getting from Auckland city or the airport to Waiheke Island.
Quick answer: The easiest way to get to Waiheke Island is the passenger ferry from the Downtown Ferry Terminal on Quay Street, Auckland, to Matiatia Bay. The trip takes about 40 minutes and ferries run throughout the day. To take a car, use the vehicle ferry from Half Moon Bay to Kennedy Point, and book ahead.
The passenger ferry
Passenger ferries leave from the Downtown Ferry Terminal at the bottom of Queen Street and arrive at Matiatia Bay on Waiheke's west end. The crossing takes around 40 minutes, with sailings roughly every 30 to 60 minutes through the day. You can take luggage and bikes, and tickets can be bought online or with a contactless card.
The car ferry
The vehicle ferry runs from Half Moon Bay in East Auckland to Kennedy Point on Waiheke and takes around 45 to 60 minutes. Bookings are essential on summer weekends, public holidays and around Christmas. Most visitors find they don't need a car, as buses, taxis and e-bikes are easy to get on the island.
From Auckland Airport
Allow at least an hour and a half from landing to ferry. The drive to the city centre takes 30 to 50 minutes depending on traffic, and the SkyBus runs between the airport and the city. From the bus stops on Queen Street, the ferry terminal is a short walk.
When you arrive at Matiatia
Buses meet most ferries and run to Oneroa, Surfdale, Ostend and Onetangi. Taxis wait at the terminal, and e-bike and car hire are available nearby. Oneroa village is about five minutes away.
Tips for a smooth trip
Buy tickets before you arrive at the terminal in summer, as queues can be long. Check the last sailing back to the city if you're on a day trip. If you're staying with us, we'll send directions from the ferry before you arrive.
