Best time to visit Wānaka: a season-by-season guide
Summer lake days, autumn colour, winter skiing or quiet spring walks. When to visit Wānaka, and what each season is like.
Quick answer: The best time to visit Wānaka depends on what you want to do. December to February is best for swimming, hiking and long evenings. March to May brings golden autumn colour and settled weather. June to September is ski season at Cardrona and Treble Cone. Spring is quieter, but Roys Peak closes from 1 October to 10 November.
Summer: December to February
Summer is Wānaka's busiest season. Days are long and warm, with light until late in the evening, so it's ideal for swimming, paddle boarding, cycling and big walks like Roys Peak and Rob Roy Glacier. Book accommodation early for Christmas, New Year and weekends in January.
Autumn: March to May
Many locals say autumn is the best time of year. The poplars and willows around the lake turn gold, the weather is often settled, and it is quieter than summer. Mornings get crisp from April, so pack layers.
Winter: June to September
Winter brings snow to the mountains and ski season at Cardrona and Treble Cone, both within about 40 minutes' drive. Days in town are often clear and still. The July school holidays are the busiest time, so book early.
Spring: October and November
Spring is quiet and good value, with blossom, lambs in the paddocks and snow still on the peaks. The weather is changeable. Roys Peak closes for lambing from 1 October to 10 November, but Isthmus Peak and Mt Iron are good alternatives.
How long to stay
Three to four nights gives you time for the lake, one big walk and a day trip to Blue Pools or the wineries. A week lets you slow down. Wānaka Retreat sleeps six and is a couple of minutes' walk from the lake.
